Lose Weight Now, Ask Me How!

Eat at McDonald's!

This morning's Tulsa World carried a story about a man in Virginia who lost 80 pounds in the last six months, and he ate every single meal at McDonald's.  Sweet action!

Chris Coleson weighed 278 pounds when he started his journey, and today he weighs in at 190.  He was wearing a size 50 pants, and today is at a 36.  His goal was to be at the same weight when he married his wife ten years ago, which is 185 pounds.  His anniversary is this Saturday, so it looks as if he is going to fall five pounds short, but so what. Good luck, Chris!

His diet at Mickey D's was not typical of most people who eat there.  He ate fruit, salads, wraps, and yogurt.  Here is a link to the Tulsa World article.  The reader responses are as funny as the story itself.  Good Morning America did a story on him on Thursday.  Here it is.

A few years ago there was a movie that came out about a guy who did that.  It was a great documentary film by Morgan Spurlock, called "Super Size Me."  Here is a link to the IMDB article on the film, which I highly recommend.

Spurlock had much different results than Coleson.  He ate at McDonald's every day for a month, and he gained weight, lost energy, felt lethargic much of the time, and became depressed.  Of course, he was eating the worst things possible on the menu.  In fairness, Spurlock interviewed a man who also ate at McDonald's everyday.  This guy had an obsession with Big Macs, and ate them every single day of his life.  He was pencil thin.  He says its because he never eats the fries.  K.

I'm not sure why this guy did what he did.  Maybe McDonald's paid him, or at least encouraged him, to have their own version of Subway's Jared.

The bottom line in this story is not surprising to anyone.  Losing weight is a matter of calories in versus calories out.  Burn more than you eat, and you will lose weight, no matter where you are eating.  I have lost weight eating at McDonald's.  Several years ago I was on the road a lot, and fast food was about my only option.  I would swing through McDonald's and get a cheeseburger.  No fries, just the burger.  I was able to do that and still stay on my plan.  At the same time, if you go to Subway and get a 12 inch meatball sub, you're going to gain weight.

The only problem I see with going to McDonald's to lose weight has to do with the discipline aspect.  Its a little like an alcoholic going to a bar to get your drink of water.  You can be as disciplined as you want, but once you step in there, and smell the smells, and see everyone else enjoying the things you cannot have, it is easy to slip up.  But that is true even at home, so why not go right into the eye of the storm?  We stopped at McDonald's on the way home from FreeWheel.  I got a salad and a Hi-C, and did just fine.  It can be done.

Discipline.  Calories in versus calories out.  Eat less than you burn.  Losing weight is easy.  You've just got to want it bad enough, and be patient enough to do it right.

I came across some before and after pictures of Chris that I hope you enjoy.  Check 'em out.
