Excellent post. I lived in Europe when I was a kid. One thing that still amazes me to this day was that you could live there and never need a car. Either by bus or train you could go to your destination and not have to walk more than a couple of blocks.

If prices go higher, there will be a major paradigm shift in our country. I don't believe it has happened yet, but when it does, we might begin to explore some of your suggestions including a train system that would take people from outside Tulsa or OKC at fast rates to a main station that would offer transportation throughout the city.

I might also add that the side walks also had bike lanes that people frequently used. You could also take your bike on the train if you wanted to explore a certain part of the city.

Anyways, you are dead on with this post.

Sounds good to me. I don't know why folks expect our government to help. It just makes no sense. Seems that too many Americans don't like to sacrifice or change their lifestyles. It's pretty simple really. Thanks for the good advice.

I'll admit it has been awhile since I wrote this article, but I went back and re-read it after your verbal assault to see what you were talking about. Perhaps you could go back and stop the name-calling, the accusations, and the false quotes (I never said anything about interest cancelling out gains), and your inability to spell, and phrase your argument in a way that makes sense. Perhaps, but I thought that the Bible was good for all those things. Tim, are you suggesting that the Bible is not sufficient to represent what the church believes about God in worship? I'm not saying that the hymns are bad, or wrong (although many hymns contain horrible theology). I am saying that all the things you describe are why we have the Bible.
The fact is that it is a profound waste of money and resources to publish hymnals, when music changes so quickly.
You left off one reason to maintain and refresh the hymnal: M-O-N-E-Y.

No offense, but this article belies a profound ignorance of what a hymnal is, and what the body of hymnody represents. A hymnal is a living representation of what the corporate church believes about God in worship. It is not just about how I feel today. The poems represent the faith of those who have gone before, their struggles against heresies, as well as a reflection of creativity of current generations. It is a tangible object that picked up, and used for either private devotion or corporate worship. These are just a few reasons to maintain and refresh hymnals.
